Baylor University is accepting applications and nominations for a tenured professor engaged in research at the interface of water and human health to fill the Jackson Endowed Chair. We seek outstanding applicants, at the associate or full professor level, conducting interdisciplinary research that complements and strengthens resident expertise in public, global, and environmental health, and water sciences, on the Baylor campus. The successful applicant will also have a passion for Latin America and be able to articulate a vision for how select aspects of their academic work will benefit communities in this geographic region.
As part of Illuminate (www.baylor.edu/illuminate), the University-wide research initiative and strategic plan, Baylor University is actively creating endowed faculty positions to recruit outstanding researchers, enhance interdisciplinary research opportunities, and promote collaborations across departments and colleges. This position represents just one aspect of Baylor’s ongoing commitment to expanding research, scholarship, and service in Latin America, building on decades of successful partnerships in the region, specifically in areas of health, water, and the environment. The Jackson Endowed Chair in Water and Health will have the opportunity to collaborate with many Baylor faculty working on federally funded projects in water and public health disciplines. Some examples include:
- Department of Statistical Science: Development of data-driven methodology to enhance water and wastewater treatment, such as forecasting water quality variables; system monitoring for fault detection and isolation; and robust data smoothing and filtering for control integration. Spatial-temporal modeling of groundwater in agricultural and urban regions of importance; forecasting vertical lake profiles of dissolved oxygen; and modeling dissolved organic carbon in river networks
- Department of Public Health: Epidemiological assessments of health issues and contributing factors; multidisciplinary research that examines integrated impacts of environmental, social, and behavioral factors (integration of the Socio-ecological Model and Social Determinants of Health); translational research; and community-based participatory research (CBPR) that engages members of underserved populations as research and intervention partners
- Department of Environmental Science: Bioaccumulation, toxicology and risks of aquatic contaminants; ecology, chemistry and toxicology of harmful algal blooms; energy-water nexus; advanced water treatment; environmental implications of nanotechnology; wastewater-based epidemiology; and environmental public health practice
- Department of Biology: Freshwater science to inform policy; waterborne tropical diseases; aquatic entomology, especially disease vectors; nuisance and harmful algal blooms; conservation of threatened and endangered aquatic plant and animal species; wetland restoration and management; climate modeling and global change biology; aquatic ecosystem thresholds in response to anthropogenic stressors; ecological statistics and computational biology
The position comes with substantial resources, including endowed funds, ample space, and start-up funding. There is also the possibility for a joint appointment with a basic science department at Baylor College of Medicine. Such links may provide the candidate access to additional core facilities and patient-oriented samples or big data from the renowned Texas Medical Center.
Qualifications
Applicants must have:
- PhD and current academic rank of associate professor, with tenure, or equivalent
- Strong publication record
- Strong track record of securing independent, peer-reviewed, federal research grants
- Successful mentorship of students earning a terminal degree
- Graduate and undergraduate teaching experience
